Long Term Assignments

Book Report:  We currently have a long term book report assigned to the students.  It is based on a Newbery Book of their choice.  This particular book report was broken down into more manageable parts and as a result there are numerous due dates.  Students are expected to turn in each section of the book report on the date in which it is due.  Please refer to the packet that was sent home for more information regarding what is expected of your child for this particular book report.  Below your will find the dates in which each section is due.*

*Note-Your child is required to use a number of templates to complete this book report, these can be found on the writing center int he classroom.  In addition, students are not allowed to write and/or draw beyond the circle, as they will be cutting these out to make a book.  In addition, when your child does hand in portions of the report on the specific due dates, they are reviewed and if any changes have been requested their report is handed back to them, in order for them to makes those necessary changes.   

• October 3- book most be completely read and 10 new words 
• October 5- summary and favorite scene
• October 9- main character and important scene
• October 11- main problem
• October 12- why this book is a winner (and pages 7 & 8 for extra credit)
• October 16- final copy of report due (this also includes self assessment)

Research Report:  Your child has been assigned a research report.  This report will research one cause of the American Revolution.  Your child has been assigned a specific cause from the list.  Students will have the opportunity in class to do much of the research.  However, your child may have to bring it home to avoid getting behind and they are responsible for bringing all research information and materials to schoool everyday.  There are several resources students can use to complete this report; encyclopedias, textbooks, non-fiction books, and reliable information from the internet (a copy of this rep0rt is on file at the Cumberland Public Library).  The report consist of the following:  rough draft (they must revise and edit before completing final project), outline, graphic organizers (additional organizers will be available to them), final poster.

The final poster must include the following information (all information must be completed in complete sentences and a minimum of 1 paragraph for each section is expected) (in parentheses you will find dates-this will help break it down into more managable chunks):

1. What was the act/cause you researched? (Nov. 22)
2. Why did the British do it? (Nov 25)
3. When did it occur? (Nov29)
4. Where did it occur/which colony was most affected? (Nov 1)
5. Who was involved-british and colonist? (Nov 5)
6. What was the colonist reaction? (Nov 8)
7. Map:  The map must have a title, scale, compass rose, colony most affected by the specific act. (work on as you go)
8. Bibliography (work on as you go)

Important Dates to Remember

Important Information

Unfinished Work Crate: 

• The main purpose of this crate is simply an organization system.  This system helps students from having papers that have yet to be complete or even started get lost in thier desk.  It also helps the teacher keep track of what work is being completed and what still needs to be finished. 
• How does it work:  1.  Students are asked to put work in the crate if they have not completed or started the assignment in the time allowed.  2.  Students are given several opportunities throughout the day to go into their crate to complete work (i.e. morning work, transition periods, while they are waiting for the bus, and they can also take it home).  3.  Students are made aware that this work must be completed by the end of the week or it will have to go home over the weekend (students who are pulled for services will not be penalized, but the work does have to be completed within a resonable time).  4.  On Friday I sit with each student and go over the work that was left in their unfinished work crate.  At that time we go over any questions they might have and they sign the Unfinished Work Contract (this contract simply states that I (Mrs. Simoes) went over the work with them, they understand their expectation to have the work completed over the weekend, they know that they are to share this information with their parents, and lastly they are aware of the consequences if the work in not completed).  5.  If the work is not completed over the weekend their will be penalites to their grade and the assignment is still due.
